The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) administers India’s most prestigious recruitment examinations. These include highly competitive exams for Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IFS), Defense Services, Engineering, Medical, and specialized technical roles, as well as several internal and departmental competitive examinations.
1. Civil Services & Administration
- Civil Services Examination (CSE): The premier exam for recruiting officers to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other Group A and B Central Services.
- Indian Forest Service (IFoS): A specialized exam for forest and environmental administration.
2. Defense & Armed Forces
- National Defence Academy & Naval Academy (NDA & NA): A bi-annual entry-level exam for 12th-pass candidates to join the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the NDA.
- Combined Defence Services (CDS): A bi-annual exam for college graduates aiming to become commissioned officers in the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy.
- Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF): Recruits Assistant Commandants (Group A Officers) in paramilitary forces like the CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB.
3. Engineering & Technical
- Engineering Services Examination (ESE): Known as the ‘Technical IAS’, it recruits engineers for Group A services in sectors like Railways, Telecommunications, and Power.
- Combined Geo-Scientist Examination: Recruits geoscientists and meteorologists for central government departments like the Geological Survey of India.
4. Specialized & Medical Services
- Indian Economic Service (IES) / Indian Statistical Service (ISS): Specialized exams for post-graduates in economics or statistics to serve in various economic and planning ministries.
- Combined Medical Services (CMS): A recruitment exam for Medical Officers in central government organizations and railways.
5. Departmental & Internal Exams
- CISF AC (EXE) LDCE: A limited departmental competitive exam for Assistant Commandants in the CISF.
- CBI (DSP) LDCE: Departmental exam for the Central Bureau of Investigation.
- SO/Steno (GD-B/GD-I) LDCE: Departmental exams for Central Secretariat staff.
