The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive exam conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission. It serves as the primary route to recruit officers for India’s premier civil services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Widely regarded as one of the toughest exams globally, it follows a rigorous three-stage selection structure. [1, 2, 3]

1. Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The Prelims is an objective, screening test meant to shortlist serious aspirants for the next round. The marks obtained here are only qualifying and do not count toward the final merit list. [3, 4, 5]

General Studies (GS Paper I): 100 multiple-choice questions (200 marks) covering history, geography, polity, economy, science, and current affairs. [6, 7, 8, 9, 10]
Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT Paper II): 80 multiple-choice questions (200 marks) testing math, reasoning, and reading comprehension. [11, 12, 13, 14, 15]
Passing Rule: Candidates must secure a minimum qualifying mark of 33% in CSAT while clearing the dynamic cutoff score set for GS Paper I. [16]
Negative Marking: One-third (1/3) of the marks allocated to a question are deducted for every incorrect response. [16]

2. Stage 2: Main Examination (Mains)

The Mains is a comprehensive, written descriptive test consisting of 9 papers conducted over several days. It evaluates deep analytical skills and conceptual articulation. The total score for this stage is 1750 marks. [16, 17, 18, 19]

3. Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)

Candidates who successfully clear the Mains cutoff are invited to New Delhi for a face-to-face interview worth 275 marks. A board assesses the candidate’s mental alertness, critical thinking, moral integrity, leadership potential, and communication skills. [16, 24, 25, 26]

The final ranking is determined solely by combining the marks of the Mains written papers (1750) and the Interview (275), out of a maximum of 2025 marks. [16, 27, 28, 29, 30]

Basic Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the UPSC CSE, an aspirant must meet these baseline rules: [31, 32]

Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen for administrative posts like the IAS and IPS. [3, 31]
Education: Must hold a Bachelor’s degree (graduation) in any discipline from a recognized university. Final-year students are also eligible to apply. [33, 34, 35]
Age Limit: Must be between 21 and 32 years of age as of August 1st of the exam year. Age relaxations apply for OBC, SC, ST, and PwD categories. [33, 36, 37, 38, 39]
Number of Attempts: General category candidates are permitted a maximum of 6 attempts. [40]
