Selection Process & Exam Pattern

Candidates must clear five continuous stages to get selected: [5, 7]

  1. First Stage CBT (CBT 1): Screening test. It consists of 75 multiple-choice questions to be solved in 60 minutes. There is a negative marking of 1/3 for every wrong answer. Note that General Awareness has been removed from this stage under the latest pattern change. [7, 8, 9, 10, 11]
  2. Second Stage CBT (CBT 2): This test is divided into two segments (Total 175 questions, 150 minutes):

    • Part B (75 Questions, 60 mins): Trade-specific test based on technical qualifications. It is strictly qualifying in nature, requiring a minimum of 35% marks to pass. [5, 9, 12, 13, 14]
  3. Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): Also known as the Psycho Test. Candidates equal to 8 times the total vacancies are called for this stage. It carries 30% weightage toward the final score selection. [9, 13, 15]
  4. Document Verification (DV): Review of academic transcripts, caste certificates, and credentials. [1, 16]
  5. Medical Examination (ME): Absolute screening for physical and vision criteria at railway hospitals. [1, 7]
